We'll Be Back Next Week

We’re taking the week off to spend time as a family and we hope you’re doing something restorative to your soul and your sense of self.

For the long weekend here in the US, we went to the Redwoods in Northern California, and learned that they’re the oldest living things on the planet — talk about being strongwilled!

it’s hard to capture the scale of how truly huge these trees are.

DL hugging the trunk of a huge redwood tree.
DL forest bathing.
six trees growing in a semi-circle
the Cathedral tree where DL gave us a short sermon about existential dread and the power of standing under trees that existed long before we were born and will long outlive us
a 9-year-old runs down a canyon path with grassy hills on either side
when we decided to go to the Redwoods we didn’t even know they were located on the coast! Not only did we experience an ancient forest, we stumbled upon this beautiful beach at Point St. George.
a coast line with yellow grassy hills bordering it.
Point Saint George.

For now, if you’re looking for more ways to process growing up under religious authoritarian parenting, we’d highly recommend a podcast episode from Veterans of the Culture War podcast, where our friends Zach Malm and Dave Lester interviewed Marlene Winell, author of the classic religious trauma book, Leaving the Fold. The episode is titled: “Leaving the Fold with Marlene Winell.”

Our June chapters will focus on toddlerhood (autonomy) and adolescence (shame) and how these developmental stages are targeted by RAP practices. We also have some exciting interviews to share that connect with the theme of pride for June. We are also hard at work on the companion podcast to this Substack, which will be launching in July (the first episode is titled: Send This Episode to Your Therapist where we try and succinctly explain the trauma of growing up with RAP methods). Stay tuned for more info on the podcast.

We’ll be back next Monday with a doozy of a chapter, but in the meantime, feel free to share with us your self-care plans, thoughts on this podcast episode or if you did anything creative over the weekend.

As always, thank you so much for supporting this project. See you next week!
